Loews Hardware at Your Loews
Home Store
I always learn something
from the home improvement shows on television and
watch a number of them daily. The only thing that I have
a problem with is my problem producing the same quick and
easy results with my do it yourself projects. Why does it
appear so easy for the guys on television but the task
becomes much more difficult for me to accomplish for me?
The do it yourself guys down at Loews hardware in the
Loews Home Store can show you a number of neat products
and guide you along in your home improvement projects. It
really does look easy. I am pretty handy and do nearly
all of my electrical, plumbing, gardening, car
maintenance and yard maintenance.
A very important point that I have learned - we
should try to use the right tool. I am not suggesting
that we go out and buy every tool we see those experts
use on television. Many of those workshops will remain in
the dream category for most people. You should have a
group of quality basic tools though. Each person must
decide for himself what he level of work might be
attempted and what are the basic tools required. Once
again you can go down to the do it yourself department at
the local Loews Home Store. They have services, products
and people that will be more than happy to help you
out.
Temperament and personality may be a factor.
Most of the experts we see on television are very
familiar with their tools and procedures and they seem to
have the job well planned. I think we should at least
have a basic plan beforehand to guide us along and to get
us started with a plan that we can follow through to
completion. I think we need to be patient with each step
and we should not try to move too fast. This could prove
a real challenge for some do it yourself handymen and I
must confess that I tend to proceed rather quickly at
times.
So what are the benefits of doing the job
yourself?
Well there is the obvious – you can save a good
amount of money. But there can be many more subtle
benefits that maybe could easily go unmentioned. For
example, you will experience more pleasure from that
garden bench if you managed to build it yourself rather
than from one you bought at the local home improvement
store.
There is much more that is not so obvious. Have
you ever worked with your children or grandchildren on a
project? It can be great fun and they learn to do things
for themselves at the same time. My own children have
saved very much money by doing things themselves and
eliminating the need to purchase the product or service.
I feel a lot of personal pride from that. I like to think
I was a small factor in helping them to be able to do
such things. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have the big
box stores helping out. You ban sit in on many seminars
at these stores like Loews hardware in the Loews Home
Store and Home Depot.
Another benefit is that you can customize the
end result exactly to satisfy your needs. I shudder at
these people on TV telling me what I want and using all
those weird, flowery terms to describe the fixtures and
colors etc. Where do they get those seemingly weird terms
to describe walls, furniture and wall coverings? Usually
I know that I want this particular result and really
don’t need somebody deciding what my house should look
like. I guess that's only me. In the end, by doing it
myself, I will manage to have what I want when I am
finally finished.
Another benefit will be the positive experience
in learning something new. Maybe you will find skills you
didn't even know that you possessed. Maybe you will
discover a better birdhouse for your habitat.
Are there downsides to do-it-yourself home
improvement? It may be a point of discussion when you
state you will "save money". I know I said this was a
benefit! Well, maybe you weren't quite as skilled as you
thought. Maybe there were a few glitches along the way
and it cost you more money than you allotted. That can
happen. I wouldn't consider that entirely negative.
Experiment and see what you can accomplish. Sometimes
your project just doesn't work out. You have still
learned something in process.
Are home improvement projects for everyone? Of
course some people would quickly answer "no" to this
question. Don’t be too quick to come to that conclusion.
Whether you are very successful or the project appears to
be a complete failure - you are going to learn
something.
Maybe you will only learn that you need to be
very careful in selecting which projects you will try to
accomplish. Maybe you will learn that in fact you really
are a handyman. However, we will all learn something by
challenging ourselves to some sort of do it yourself home
improvement project!
Why not give it a try! Don’t forget that your
local big box store such as your local Loews hardware in
the Loews Home Store are quite willing to assist you at
all times in tool selection and will help you find the
product you need.
